Transfer of doctoral students between programmes governed by Royal Decree 99/2011 / Transfer of doctoral students from programmes governed by previous regulations to doctoral programmes specified in Royal Decree 99/2011

Application procedure


Doctoral student or the duly person on presentation of the necessary identification

A. Who are registered for a doctoral programme governed by RD 99/2011 to request that they be incorporated into another programme governed by RD 99/2011.

B. Who from the entry into force of the Royal Decree 99/2011 (11 February 2011), have been registered on a doctoral programme governed by the previous regulations, not finishing it (RD 185/1985, RD 778/1998, RD 56/2005, RD 1393/2007).

  • First phase: from 12 July to 4 November 2024 (recommended option). August shall not be counted for academic purposes and no new preregistrations would be able to be done.
  • Second phase: from 10 January to 10 March 2025.


Students must:

  1. Complete the on-line pre-enrolment application form (It opens only during the periods indicated on the web).

  2. Write 'TRANSFER BETWEEN PROGRAMMES GOVERNED BY RD 99/2011' or 'TRANSFER FROM PREVIOUS ROYAL DECREES' in the 'Observations' section of the online pre-registration form.

  3. If doctoral students have completed activities under the previous regulations that can be submitted under the new doctoral regulations, they must submit these activities along with the corresponding accrediting documentation before the corresponding pre-registration period expires.


Doctoral students who have moved between or to doctoral programmes governed by RD 99/2011 are able to request a reduction in the minimum duration of the doctoral degree to one academic year and one positive evaluations, so that they can initiate the procedures for the thesis defence.

  • First phase: from 12 July to 4 December 2024. August shall not be counted for academic purposes, therefore admissions done during August will be processed from September.
  • Second phase: from 10 January to 3 April 2025.


  • Doctoral students must take into account:

    • The number of places specified in the doctoral programme report.

    • The documentation that the candidate has presented to the Doctoral School for admission purposes.

    • The selection criteria specified in the doctoral programme report.

    • Whether the courses, seminars and study visits that they completed under the previous regulations have the same duration and content as those of the new doctoral programme. If these activities are recognized totally or partially, doctoral students should include them in their personal Activities Record (DAD). These activities will then count towards the final qualification in the place of other activities on the programme.

    • For programmes that allow for possible bridging courses (CF), once the academic committee has evaluated the academic transcript it must specify which additional training the student has to carry out.

  • Once the decision has been taken:

    • An email will be sent to the doctoral students informing them as to whether they have been admitted or excluded. Students who have been admitted will receive information, in this same email, regarding the thesis tutor and supervisor who have been assigned to them, the documents required for registration and payment, and the deadline for doing it.

    • Before the deadline, admitted doctoral students must register and pay the fees for the new doctoral programme. It is necessary to apply for the cancellation of the registration to the previous programme (procedure of cancellation of registration).


The duration of the doctoral student's studies will be calculated from the moment in which the candidate is admitted (date on which he/she first registers for the doctoral programme).
