The aims of the Doctoral Programme in Social Work are: (i) to promote the training of teachers, researchers and professionals so as to further develop current lines of research and continue current discussions in the field of Social Work; and (ii) consolidate the critical knowledge that will help to solve current problems by means of this internationally recognized academic and professional discipline.

Practically all the universities in the English-speaking world that offer studies in Social Work also provide doctoral programmes in this field. The situation in Europe, and more specifically in Spain, is much more deficient. In Spain, only one of the 37 programmes offered directly or indirectly by Spanish universities is related to Social Work. Moreover, this problem is exacerbated by the lack of this type of programme in Latin America.

For these reasons, this Interuniversity Doctoral Programme in Social Work, which combines the resources of three universities (the Public University of Navarre, the Rovira i Virgili University, and the University of Murcia) and enjoys the collaboration of numerous professors from many others, offers a specific doctoral profile aimed at training human resources that enhance the production of knowledge and develop research and teaching in areas of interest for Social Work.

This doctoral programme will develop skills and abilities that will enable PhD students to:

The programme, which can be completed in three years, includes several training options to be conducted at the three universities mentioned. The lines of research related to Social Work that students may select are divided into the following areas:

  1. Social work and social services
  2. Vulnerability, migration and social development
  3. Mediation and alternative methods of conflict resolution
  4. Epistemological and ethical issues in Social Work intervention
  5. Social policies for tackling poverty and exclusion

Students may also choose to complete their training at other Spanish or Latin American universities with which a mobility agreement has been reached.

The doctoral programme in Social Work is coordinated by the Universidad de Murcia and is jointly organised by the following universities:
