The doctoral programme in Nutrigenomics and Personalised Nutrition offers specialised training for research in the most advanced and innovative aspects of nutrition. Particular attention is paid to molecular nutrition and such new technologies as transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, metabolomics and the concept of systems biology. Training in these areas is essential for the new professionals in the field of nutrition, who also need to understand concepts related to food safety, food quality, nutritional value, functional foods, and their impact on health.

The doctoral programme in Nutrigenomics and Personalised Nutrition is coordinated by the Universitat de les Illes Balears and is jointly organised by the following universities:

Participating universities

Relationship between the 3 universities

The Doctoral Programme in Nutrigenomics and Personalised Nutrition is an interuniversity programme taught by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the URV, with the UIB as the coordinator. The three universities have a long history of collaboration, having participated in various joint research projects and published colaborative research
articles. Although all three universities conduct research in the ambit of nutrigenomics and molecular nutrition, collaboration between them allows them to offer a range of specializations and techniques that enable students to access a broader and more integrated training experience that covers basic techniques in molecular nutrition, physiology, omic techniques (including transcriptomics, proteomics and
metabolomics) in silico research, etc. Another attractive aspect of the doctoral programme is that students can undertake mobility visits between the collaborating universities where they can learn experimental techniques, conduct joint research projects and undertake a jointly supervised doctoral thesis. All of this increases training and research excellence.

Collaboration Agreement

Commitment to quality assurance

The doctoral programme aims to train students to carry out research activities in the following areas:

Basic

CB11 - Systematic understanding of a field of study and a thorough command of the skills and research methods related to this field.

CB12 - Capacity to conceive, design or create, put into practice and adopt a substantial research or creative process.

CB13 - Capacity to help expand the frontiers of knowledge through original research.

CB14 - Capacity to critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise new and complex ideas.

CB15 - Capacity to communicate their knowledge effectively with the academic and scientific community and with society in general and in the manner and
languages habitually used by the international scientific community.

CB16 - Capacity to promote in academic and professional contexts the scientific, technological, social, artistic or cultural advances deriving from a knowledge-based society.

Personal skills and abilities

CA01 - Capacity for development in contexts where there is little specific information.

CA02 - Identifying the key issues that need to be addressed in order to solve a complex problem.

CA03 - Designing, creating, developing and undertaking innovative research projects in their ambit of knowledge.

CA04 - Working in a team or autonomously in an international or multidisciplinary context.

CA05 - Integrating knowledge, dealing with complexity and formulating judgements with limited information.

CA06 - Capacity to critique and intellectually defend solutions.

Infrastructure

Classrooms and works spaces

University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU):

- The Faculty of Pharmacy has 22 classrooms, as well as two multi-purpose rooms which can seat 40 students, suitable for group work.
-An Assembly Hall and a Video Conference Room.
-The students of the UPV/EHU can also use the facilities of the Nutrition and Obesity Group at both the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Lucio Lascaray Centre for Research and Advanced Studies.

University of the Balearic Islands:

-The available material resources and means that the University of the Balearic Islands provides for the doctoral programs are regarded as suitable for ensuring the carrying out of the research conducted by the students.

Rovira i Virgili University:

-The research group has a common office for all the doctoral students which can seat 15 people, with internet connection and access to the university database.
-Departmental seminar rooms: three classrooms which can seat 40 students.
-Technical and Scientific Resource Service: The Technical and Scientific Resource Service of the University.

Laboratories, workshop and experimental facilities

University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU):

-The Department involved in the teaching has its own active laboratories, with separate spaces for teaching and research.
-In addition, the Faculty has 3 multi-purpose laboratories, 2 fully-equipped microscopy laboratories, a food plant and a laboratory for sensory analysis with a tasting room and a gas station.

Rovira i Virgili University:

-The nutrigenomics group has two laboratories which can seat about 30 people.
-There is also a common equipment room which the research group reciprocally shares with the other research groups of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
